Prešeren – the poet
Step into the home of Slovenia’s greatest poet. It was in this house that France Prešeren spent the last years of his life, writing, receiving clients as a lawyer, and dying on 8 February 1849.
Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. For groups of more than 10 people, we recommend booking in advance.
The renovated permanent exhibition takes you through the poet’s life story in an original and immersive way. You will walk through the authentically furnished rooms of his home, where the original furniture, his law office, and bedroom have been preserved. It is here that you will sense Prešeren as a person — not only as a poet.
At the heart of the exhibition is his poetry. Among the precious museum objects, the manuscripts stand out, as do the first editions of Poezije, the Sonetni venec (Wreath of Sonnets), and Krst pri Savici (The Baptism on the Savica), the original copy of Zdravljica (A Toast), and numerous documents that testify to Prešeren’s creative work and his influence on the Slovenian national awakening.

A distinctive exhibition experience is created by contemporary graphic design, artistic interpretations by Andrej Štular, projections of various images of the poet, and the chance to listen to Prešeren’s poems set to music. The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on a question that remains open to this day — who was the real France Prešeren?
At the end of the exhibition you also learn how Prešeren’s work inspired generations of Slovenian artists — from his contemporaries to Prešeren Award recipients, who continue his cultural legacy to this day.
Prešeren House is more than a museum. It is a place where Slovenia’s greatest poet comes alive again — through his words, objects, and stories that still speak to everyone who steps through its doors.
