The permanent archaeological exhibition The Iron Thread takes you on an extraordinary journey through time – from an Ice Age landscape where mammoths and bison once walked, to permanent settlement and the first Slavic communities in Gorenjska.

Among the most precious exhibits are fossil remains of a mammoth from Bobovek, a bison from Leše and prehistoric fish, a bronze sword from Lake Bled, a hoard of bronze objects from Jelenov klanc, rich finds from Drulovka, and outstanding objects from the Roman and late antique periods. Discoveries from Kranj, Bled, Ajdna and Bašelj also hold a special place, revealing the life, power and wealth of the first inhabitants of this area.

Zlata doba karnija

You will walk through different historical periods, stand before a reconstructed Neolithic hut, meet the first farmers, follow the rise of metalworking, the arrival of the Romans and the turbulent age of migrations. Original archaeological objects, reconstructions and models bring to life the story of how Gorenjska took shape over millennia.

The exhibition shows that history is not merely a list of dates, but a story of people, their knowledge, courage and creativity. Each object is part of a larger narrative that connects nature, people and the place we still live in today.

If you want to know how Gorenjska was born, The Iron Thread is an exhibition you simply must not miss.
