Folk Art in Gorenjska
Beauty once lived in everyday things. In chests, doors, cradles, distaffs, beehive panels and festive clothing. These are the stories told by the permanent exhibition Folk Art in Gorenjska.
Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. For groups of more than 10 people we recommend booking in advance.
The exhibition reveals how over the centuries the people of Gorenjska combined usefulness, creativity and a sense of beauty. On display are richly painted chests and cradles, carved and painted furniture, traditional costumes, embroidery, pottery, wooden everyday objects and many other precious examples of folk art made in home workshops and farmhouses.
A special experience comes from original architectural elements of a Gorenjska house – carved wooden ceilings, stone portals, painted doors and shutters – that take visitors into the world of former domestic culture. The exhibition also presents characteristic Gorenjska building traditions, from hayracks and granaries to shepherds’ huts and village shrines that shaped the distinctive cultural landscape.

You will encounter objects that accompanied festivals, work and everyday life: finely decorated distaffs that young men gave to girls, traditional pottery, carved wooden pieces, painted beehive panels, and a rich heritage of popular devotion with Baroque frescoes, wooden sculptures and sacred images.
The exhibition shows that folk art did not grow only from skilful hands, but also from pride, faith, love of home and the wish for a more beautiful life. It is a story of the creativity of people who knew how to breathe extraordinary beauty into even the most ordinary objects.
Discover the richness of Gorenjska’s folk heritage and step into a world where every object has its own story.
