Between Sea and Stone
Art of the Trieste and Littoral region. The sea gave breadth, the stone gave strength. From their meeting came art that still shapes the cultural landscape of Primorska.
Temporary exhibition. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement.
The exhibition Between Sea and Stone explores the creative pulse of Trieste, the Karst and the Goriška region – a space where different languages, cultures and historical experiences have intertwined for centuries. From this unique environment grew artists and writers who have significantly marked Slovenian art.
At the heart of the exhibition are works by Avgust Černigoj, Lojze Spacal, Klavdij Palčič, Franco Vecchiet and Silvester Komel, recipients of the Prešeren Award and the Prešeren Fund Award. Their visual works enter into dialogue with the words of Srečko Kosovel, Igo Gruden, Miroslav Košuta, Marko Kravos, Boris Pahor, Alojz Rebula, Dušan Jelinčič and Renato Quaglia, together creating a narrative of a place shaped by the bora wind, stone, sea and people.

The exhibition also symbolically ties in with the Kosovel Year, giving a special place to the poet who, with his vision of the Karst, became one of the most recognisable figures in Slovenian literature. The participation of painter Silvester Komel also extends the exhibition into the contemporary Goriška cultural space.
The project was created in collaboration between the Gallery of Prešeren Award Winners of the Gorenjski Museum and the Nova Gorica City Gallery. It is accompanied by a bilingual Slovenian–Italian publication that for the first time presents in one place all recipients of Prešeren honours from the Trieste area and sheds light on the rich connections between visual art, literature, music and theatre.
Between Sea and Stone is not only an exhibition about art. It is a story of a place where landscape becomes inspiration, word becomes image, and art a bridge between cultures.
